 Recorded 13 times Earthquake
Reportase: Ishaq Alhakim / Yohanes Clemens

THE FREQUENCY OF Seismicity in parts of Central Sulawesi yesterday
was quite intensive. The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Palu
Station recorded 13 earthquake shocks with central points in Poso, Sigi,
Donggala, Tolitoli and Ampana.

On Sunday (3/24/2019) the earthquake measuring 5.7
on the Richter scale rocked Poso District.
The epicenter was located 53 kilometers southwest
of Poso District at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The location of the earthquake was 1.84 LS (South
Latitude) and 120. 54 BT (East West). The earthquake did not have a tsunami
potential, said BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati in the earthquake release issued
by BMKG on her official website.

The earthquake that occurred at 09.32 o’clock The
time that made Poso residents in four sub-districts felt such a shock.

Reportedly, a number of houses of worship
buildings in the Pamona area were damaged.

Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency
(BPBD) of Poso Regency, Masdian Mentiri, said that his office is still carrying
out data collection.

Regarding the amount of damage, the temporary data
collected were 28 houses of worship, namely 1 public Pura worship house and 27
private temples located in Meko Village and Toinasa Pamona Bersaudara.

He said, until now the data collection had been
carried out, while the casualties were currently zero and damage to houses in
the town of Poso was not present.

One resident of Tentena Andhika who was contacted
by the media said that there was one church in the village of Leboni which was
damaged by the devastating earthquake.

When the earthquake occurred at around 09:35 a.m.
in Tentena, residents still worshiped in the church.

“Suddenly the earth shook to make the
congregation scatter out of the church, until the earthquake subsided, worship
continued outside the church,” he said.

Panic was also experienced by patients at the Poso
Regional General Hospital (RSUD). The patients ran hysterically out of the
room, but now the number of patients has returned to their respective rooms.

Meanwhile, the Head of BMKG Palu Geophysics
Station Cahyo Nugroho who was confirmed related whether the frequency and
intensity of seismicity that occurred, the nature of reconstructing faults to a
stable point, or still moving towards the peak of energy release, revealed
basically the activity inside the earth is dynamic, due to its dynamic then the
release of energy depends on the strength of the structure above it.

“In the case of earthquake 5.7 in Poso, it is
a normal energy release activity, and it will be very beneficial for those of
us who live on it if a fast fault releases its energy release, because the
energy released is certainly not too large,” Cahyo Nugroho explained.

If the dynamic activity is then locked in a long
enough period of time, of course it will cause a greater accumulation of energy
which is urgent to be released. If the locked energy is released, it will cause
an event like September 28, 2018.

“So the eartquake this afternoon
(yesterday-red) was a normal energy release activity due to the Poso fault
activity, not the Palu Koro fault,” he said.

There were 11 times the aftershock activity in
Poso after the 5.7 earthquake with a lower magnitude ranging from 3-4.

“We are still monitoring it, from 11 this
afternoon there have been aftershocks,” he said.

Besides in Poso, BMKG also noted that earthquake
activity also occurred in Donggala at 11:30 a.m. with a magnitude of 3.1 SR,
then at 15.46 Wita in Sigi 3.5 SR. Di Ampana at 19.01 Wita 4.4 SR and in
Tolitoli 3.6 SR at 9:35 p.m.

Responding to the intensity of the earthquake,
disaster observer Dr. Abdullah MT said that all the earthquakes yesterday were
generally on the Poso fault line.

The Palu-Koro fault is heading for recovery, while
the Poso fault is unclear whether it is heading for a break or heading for
recovery. But as far as is known, the Poso fault activity is always below 6.0
magnitude. The safe distance of the tsunami with Lake Poso must always be
maintained. In the range of 1 km or a height above 15 meters.

“What is clear is that we must always be
aware of any earthquake shocks. “The position of the cabinet, any stove
that is on, pay attention to the quality of the electricity network at
home,” he said. **
