THE COMMEMORATION OF World Labor Day or May Day which is
commemorated on the 1st of May is an important momentum for the workers’
struggle in fighting for their rights and welfare.

This year’s May Day commemoration in Palu City is different from
previous years. The commemoration of the labor day this time there was no
demonstration taking to the streets, but prioritizing social dialogue.

Regional Confederation Coordinator of the Indonesian Prosperous Labor
Union (SBSI) Central Sulawesi Province Karlan Ladandu said the organization he
led had consolidated all workers to take seriously what they were facing to
coincide with Labor Day 1 May 2019.

“We are carrying out dialogue regarding the development of workers
now,” he said.

This is done, said Karlan, aiming to find solutions to every problem
faced by workers by means of communication.

Hundreds of workers’ representatives in Palu City gathered at the Palu
Sports Park (GOR) Park on Wednesday (1/5/2019).

Gathering, the workers’ representatives came from four trade unions in
Central Sulawesi.

They held a dialogue, presenting related parties. Like the government
of Palu City, company associations, and social guarantor of workers.

The four trade unions, the Conference of the Indonesian Prosperous
Trade Unions (KSBSI) of Central Sulawesi Province, and the Central Sulawesi
Federation of Indonesian National Trade Unions (FSPNI), and the Central
Sulawesi Provincial Indonesian Trade Union Confederation, and the Provincial
Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI) Central Sulawesi.

According to Karlan Ladandu, through the commemoration of World Labor
Day, togetherness between trade union organizations in Palu City will be
developed to fight for the same goal, namely the welfare of workers.

Because, explained Karlan, the welfare of workers in Central Sulawesi
still needs to be fought for, ranging from minimal wages, more hours of work
than provisions to discrimination in health services in hospitals.

With the theme “Ensuring the continuity of industrial,
professional, humanitarian and fair relations to rebuild the better city of
Palu”, the May Day commemoration was also enlivened with Dzikir Akbar,
Domino match, planting trees in the Kaombona forest and walking leisurely while
picking up trash.

The activity is also coupled with the granting of compensation for dead
work accident insurance and pension benefits from BPJS Employment to two heirs
of workers who have died, amounting to Rp. 491 million and Rp. 240 million.

Palu Mayor Hidayat said that with various activities carried out by
Trade Unions in Palu City to commemorate World Labor Day is a form of
appreciation for the cooperation that has been well established between Palu
City government and trade unions amid the economic downturn in Palu after the
disaster.

Mayor hopes that trade unions can work together to rebuild the economy
of the better city of Palu.

“In the midst of the economic downturn, of course we are expected
to jointly have to rebuild the economy. Together with workers, with workers,
with the government and with employers. Therefore we hope that our labor day
will create the best solution in rebuilding the economy in Palu City,
“Hidayat said.

At the end of the dialogue, a petition was signed between the
government and representatives of trade unions in the city of Palu.

The petition points put forward by the workers are: The government
guarantees harmonious and proportional industrial relations in the city of
Palu. Acting firmly on the investment companies that conducts out shorcing
systems that are contrary to the laws and regulations. Take firm action on the
suppression of labor unions in companies and outside the company in any way
against the management of the SP / SB.

Revised or revoked PP 78 of 2015 concerning Wages, because it no longer
involved labor unions in determining MSEs. Helping the management and members
of the SP / SB affected by the disaster on 28 September 2018 who lost their
families and property. Allocate regional budget funds of at least 5% for welfare
or fostering SP / SB organizations specifically in the city of Palu and
Functioning the Tripartid council in fostering industrial relations in the city
of Palu. **
